Ray Long manchester yoga bandhaRay Long MD FRCSC is a board certified orthopedic surgeon and the author of the best selling ‘Scientific Keys’ book series on anatomy and Yoga. Ray has studied hatha yoga for over twenty years , training extensively with the late great BKS Iyengar and other of the world’s leading yoga masters.

Yoga Manchester are thrilled to announce details of the workshop with the brilliant Ray Long – we’ve worked hard to pin the man down to a weekend – his very first in Manchester. This is a real opportunity for students from ALL yoga disciplines to study with a true yoga genius.

Friday 17th April

7 pm – 9 pm

Functional anatomy and physiology of joints and muscles. Breath biomechanics with emphasis on integration with asanas. Principles of injury prevention in asanas. Pose analysis and application of fundamentals in asana (forward bends) with anatomic sequencing.

Saturday 18th April

Session one: 10 am – 12 pm
Session two: 1 pm – 3 pm

Digging deeper into the concepts presented on Day 1, analysing the sacroiliac joint and its relationship to the hips, pelvis and spine. Pose analysis and application of fundamentals in asana (back bends). Application of breath biomechanics and bio-energetics in pranayama.

Sunday 19th April

Session one: 10 am – 12 pm
Session two: 1 pm – 3 pm

Further refinement of fundamentals of functional anatomy for yoga with emphasis on training muscular engagement, including the psoas and core muscles of the trunk. The effects of aging on the joints and the use of core engagement to protect the spine. Pose analysis including application in asana (hanumanasana and standing poses). Review and conclusion.

At the conclusion of this course, attendees will have an understanding of the fundamentals of joint structure and function as applied to yoga asanas. They will also have an understanding of state of the art stretching techniques and their safe application. Attendees will be able to apply this knowledge to analyze and asanas for personal practice as well as creation of classes based on anatomic sequencing. They will understand the practical application of breath biomechanics in both asana and pranayama.
