An Experimental workshop using Ashtanga Yoga & Zen Meditation with Matt Ryan.
‘Yoga and Meditation are synonymous ‘
– David Williams
Using the practices of Ashtanga and Zazen (Zen meditation) Yoga Manchester’s yogi in chief Matt Ryan will be teaching students how to allow both practices to ‘inform’ each other to create a much deeper more focused on the mat experience. That on the mat experience can in turn help to create a more present encounter of the expression of life – the microcosm of the macrocosm.
‘I have been practicing Ashtanga now for nearly 20 years and it was only when I introduced Zazen as part of my daily routine around 5 years ago that I started to fully internalise and make sense of Ashtanga. They (Ashtanga and Zazen) became 2 sides of the same coin.
It’s so easy to get lost in the physical aesthetic of Ashtanga that the more subtle internal practice gets lost in the noise – using Zazen has helped me to quieten down the crazy mind and embrace the quality of a true practice. I have discovered through Zazen how the mind component of Ashtanga Yoga is integral to the whole foundation of the practice and to the complete understanding of the external physical form.
About the workshop
Matt will be breaking down the Ashtanga Yoga primary series into different sections ; Sun Salutes , Standing Postures , Seated Postures etc there will also be an extended back-bending sequence . In between each section there will be a period of zazen. The length of time in each period of Zazen will increase during the workshop- leading up to an extended period of sitting at the end of the sequence.
